Bay Area Peninsula Photoshoot locations

Top Photoshoot Locations on the San Francisco Peninsula

The Best Backdrops for Portraits, Branding, and Self-Love Sessions

As a Bay Area photographer, I’m lucky to have access to some of the most stunning and diverse locations in California — and many of my favorite hidden gems are right here on the San Francisco Peninsula. Whether you’re looking for lush forests, dreamy coastlines, or modern architecture, this stretch of land between San Francisco and San Jose has it all.

Here are some of my top recommended locations for your next photoshoot — perfect for couples, creatives, entrepreneurs, and anyone wanting to feel beautiful and confident in front of the camera.

1. Stanford Cactus Garden – Palo Alto

This often-overlooked desert oasis on the Stanford University campus is full of unique textures, golden tones, and cactus silhouettes that photograph beautifully year-round. It’s especially dreamy during golden hour, giving a warm, editorial look to any shoot.

Best For: Personal branding, couples, fashion/editorial vibes
Pro Tip: Flat shoes are a must — the dirt paths are a little rugged but worth it!

2. Windy Hill Open Space Preserve – Portola Valley

If you're a nature lover, Windy Hill offers sweeping hilltop views, tall grass, and tree-lined trails. It’s especially breathtaking in the spring when everything is green and glowing.

Best For: Engagement sessions, dreamy self-love portraits, outdoor brand sessions
Pro Tip: The hike is mild, but plan ahead for wind — it adds gorgeous movement to hair and clothing!

3. Half Moon Bay – Coastal Access Points

Okay, technically it’s just west of the Peninsula, but I couldn’t not include it. From dramatic cliffs to soft sand beaches, Half Moon Bay has multiple coastal access points (like Poplar Beach or Cowell Ranch) that offer variety within a single session.

Best For: Empowering beach boudoir, maternity, couples, and dreamy portrait sessions
Pro Tip: Bring a towel or wrap — the weather changes fast, and it gets chilly!

4. Filoli Historic House & Gardens – Woodside

Filoli is elegance and charm rolled into one. With beautifully manicured gardens, ivy-covered walls, and European-style architecture, it's a favorite for romantic and timeless photos.

Best For: Romantic portraits, branding for creatives or florists, lifestyle sessions
Pro Tip: You’ll need to purchase a ticket and sometimes arrange a photography permit, so let’s plan ahead!

5. Redwood Groves – Los Altos & Woodside

Want to be surrounded by towering redwoods? Hidden gems like the Redwood Grove Nature Preserve in Los Altos or Huddart Park in Woodside offer peaceful forest vibes without the long drive to Muir Woods.

Best For: Empowering portraits, spiritual/self-love sessions, family photos
Pro Tip: The filtered light through the trees creates a soft, flattering glow.

6. Downtown Palo Alto or Redwood City – Urban Branding

Need something with a bit more edge or structure? The downtown areas of Palo Alto and Redwood City have murals, coffee shops, brick walls, and modern office buildings — perfect for a clean, urban look.

Best For: Professional headshots, branding for creatives, lifestyle entrepreneurs
Pro Tip: Let’s shoot early or mid-week to avoid crowds and catch the best light.

Choosing the Right Spot for You

The perfect location depends on your vibe, your wardrobe, and how you want your photos to feel. When we book a session together, I’ll help guide you to the best fit for your story — whether that’s barefoot on the beach or twirling under a canopy of redwoods.
