Outfit Ideas for Family Photos

How to Dress for Your Family Photos: Timeless Outfit Tips

When you book your family photo session, one of the first questions you might ask is: What should we wear? Outfits can truly set the tone for your photos, and choosing the right clothing makes your images timeless while also keeping the focus on your family’s connection. As a Sacramento family photographer, I often guide families on outfit choices that not only look beautiful but also feel comfortable.

Choose Neutral and Earth Tones

Neutral colors — like soft creams, tans, sage greens, and muted browns — always photograph well outdoors. They blend seamlessly with natural backdrops, allowing your family’s personalities to shine. In these images, the family’s soft greens, whites, and browns give a cohesive look without overpowering the scene.

Add Subtle Patterns

Patterns can bring visual interest when used thoughtfully. For example, a leaf-patterned dress or an embroidered shirt adds personality while still staying harmonious with the rest of the family. My advice? Stick to one or two patterned items per group so it doesn’t become too busy.

Comfort is Key

Especially for kids, comfortable clothes are non-negotiable. Linen fabrics, loose shirts, and soft shorts are perfect for children who love to move around. When kids feel comfortable, their smiles come naturally — and that’s what we want to capture.

Coordinate, Don’t Match

Gone are the days of everyone in matching jeans and white t-shirts. Instead, think about coordinating 2–3 colors and weaving them throughout your family’s outfits. This approach creates variety while keeping everything visually connected.

Pay Attention to Shoes

Shoes often get overlooked, but they show up in photos more than you think. Neutral sandals, woven flats, or clean sneakers complement your look and keep things polished. Avoid overly bright athletic shoes unless they’re part of your child’s personality (and in that case — lean into it, because it tells your story!).
